Every day in the United States, humans are faced with ethical dilemmas; and in the workplace, these situations can be even more challenging. In the scenario where I am a partner in a veterinary clinic with my best friend, who starts abusing a controlled drug, I am put in a difficult situation. Not only is he stealing the Ketamine, he is using and selling it. In terms of my friendship, I would want to get my friend help with his drug abuse problem, as Ketamine can become very addictive and dangerous. However, in regards to our business, he did steal and deal a controlled substance. Therefore, I do feel there should be some form of disciplinary action taken. Of course I would not want my veterinary clinic to be seen in a negative light, but my partner needs to understand that what he did is a serious crime. Even though our friendship might be strained or non-existent after this incident, it will be better for everyone in the long wrong if the appropriate measures are taken from the beginning. If my partner is aware he can no longer get away with his inappropriate behavior, goes to rehabilitation, and recovers the damages for the problems he has caused then there will not be a problem in the future. Unfortunately for my partner, once he is uncovered in the public, his veterinary license may be revoked, or he will no longer be a respected veterinarian. Although I sound unsympathetic towards my best friend, we all took the Veterinarian’s Oath hence we should stay true to that. What my friend did was wrong, and I believe that everyone should face his or her consequences, no matter how big or small.
