Original Text: Initial Writing Assignment
My experience with writing and composition, as far as in a college capacity is concerned, has been limited. I took my first college English class last semester and I was very pleasantly surprised when I kept an A throughout the class. When I was a young child I use to love to write, whether it be in my diary about my day or in a notebook filled with made up stories. As I got older I began to write less and less until eventually I stopped writing altogether with of course the exception of school work. When I was young writing was something fun I could do in my spare time but when I became older it turned more into something I had to do for class and it no longer held much interest to me. I suppose this could be because I have never been very confidant in my writings in a school setting. While I do not particularly enjoy writing I do feel I have some strengths as well as some weakness when it comes to writing.
When It comes to my strengths in writing I would have to say my ability to sit and write for long periods of time would be my best. While the tendency to overwhelm myself with ideas for my paper would be my worst. There have been times in the past where I have been laying in bed and suddenly a good idea for a paper will come to me and I will spend the next few hours just typing away on my computer trying to get it all out on paper before I forget. There have also been times when I have sat on my bed staring at a list of ideas for what seemed like forever with no idea where to start. That is something I feel I defiantly need to work on.
This semester I would really like to work on improving my ability to narrow down my ideas and work on only writing down the ones that really focus on my paper. I hope that doing this will help me to feel more confidant in my writing as well as to help me not to feel as overwhelmed when writing. To do this I intend to try out many of the tips I have found in the LB Brief including but not limited to learning how to better analyze the writing situation and learning to define the purpose of my paper so that I may compare my ideas with the purpose and get a better idea of what ideas fit with the paper and what ideas do not.
