Statement On Civic Engagement

From high school to university, I actively took part in some meaningful volunteer activities. Specifically, I have joined in a project called “sowing seeds” which teaches poor children to read and write. My job is being responsible for managing the group preparing lesson plans to teach these children. Through this activity, I accumulated many valuable experiences in terms of leadership and teamwork skills which are surely important to my future career. Actually, this activity made some great achievements, that is, it attracts many other non-profit organizations, especially, Vietnamese Red Cross to join in and sponsor, thus partly contributing to drawing more the society’s concern about the studies of poor children. In addition, another volunteering activity that maybe I regard it as the most memorable event in my life is the campaign which relieves the serious loss regarding possessions and lives of victims suffering from the historic flood in Central provinces Vietnam, the most devastated one than ever before at the beginning of Oct 2010. Our mission is to distributing basic necessities such as food, clothing and even books to meet theirs’ emergency need.
If I am accepted to be in this program, I hope to take part in a volunteering activities related to the environment that I have had not any experiences about it yet. In fact, my city where I am living is Danang whose sea has been voted as one of the most beautiful and attracting beaches in the planet, 2005, according to Forbes. However, the environmental situation there have been gradually more polluted due to wastes from people peddling wares, unawareness of tourists and residents in throwing garbage away to the beaches and untreated waste water from coastal resident areas, etc. As I know, USA has reached the high level of protecting, managing the beach environment as well as raising people’s awareness. Therefore, I wish to learn these methods and experiences and apply them to my environment projects in my city. My plan is to create a club consisting of students interested in environment problems in Danang beaches with the primary goal of propagandizing the benefits gained from the clean beach environment, thereby raising people’s awareness of protecting it.

Actually, this activity produced some great achievements, it attracts many other non-profit organizations, especially the Vietnamese Red Cross, to join in and sponsor, thus partly contributing to focusing more of society’s concern on the studies of poor children.

In addition, another volunteering activity that I regard as the most memorable event in my life, is the campaign which relieved the serious losses of possessions and lives by victims suffering from the historic flood in the central provinces of Vietnam. This flood, at the beginning of Oct. 2010, was the most devastated one ever. Our mission is distributing basic necessities such as food, clothing and even books to meet emergency needs.
